Think you “can’t draw”? This 4 week Tuesday night class is for you.
Overview
Drawing isn’t magic — and it isn’t reserved for the “talented.” It’s a skill you can learn. In this welcoming, beginner-friendly four week class, you’ll discover how artists actually see— and why learning to draw is more about perception than perfection. The class will focus on drawing from observation using a variety of objects and interesting still life set ups. Through a series of time-tested exercises (including techniques inspired by Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Betty Edwards’ book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain) you’ll gently shift into “drawing mode,” quiet your inner critic, and build confidence one line at a time.
You’ll explore:
• How to draw from observation and enjoy it!
• Starting a drawing by making lots of “starts.”
• Mark-making and contour drawing
• Artist secrets - shapes and planes and negative space
• Why creating an “Upside-down drawing” makes you a better artist • How light and shadow create form
• The components of a strong composition
• Easy perspective and proportion techniques
You will leave with:
Two beautiful still life drawings, increased confidence in your abilities, and a way to build a sustainable sketchbook practice.
This is a space to experiment, slow down, and reconnect with the joy of looking closely. The instructor will play classical music, or bring your own (with headphones please!). No pressure. No grades. Just practice and progress. Perfect for total beginners and anyone who wants to return to drawing with fresh eyes.
A materials list will be sent 7 days before the class start date and send to anyone who signs up after that date.
