Overview
The word collage can mean different things to different people. You might picture summer camp scrapbooks. You might think of Hannah Höch and the early modernists. Or maybe even The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
No matter your reference point, this introductory workshop is designed to give you a thoughtful and accessible foundation in the art of collage. We’ll begin with a short history of collage and how contemporary artists are expanding the medium today. Then we’ll move into the practical side: materials and supplies (yes, we’ll talk about glue), image use and intellectual property basics, and the elements that make a collage work — intuition, play, composition, color, and layering.
After this introduction, you’ll be guided through a collage exercise where you’ll put what you’ve learned into practice. You’ll have dedicated time to experiment and create — and you’ll leave with a finished collage of your own.
