Explore transparency. Play with opacity. Find your flow.

What happens when light passes through watercolor… and when it doesn’t?
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore the luminous transparency of watercolor alongside the rich, velvety opacity of gouache. Gouache is water-soluble like watercolor, but more forgiving — you can layer, adjust, and shift colors as you go. Use it on its own or alongside watercolor to create bold, vibrant paintings filled with color and energy.

This class is open to both total beginners and more experienced painters. We’ll begin with simple warm-up exercises to loosen up and ease into the visual world. You’ll learn (or revisit) painting fundamentals and experiment with structured exercises that highlight the differences between the two mediums. We’ll explore various papers, layering techniques, and best practices for starting a painting with confidence. In the second half, you’ll put what you’ve learned into practice and paint a floral still life.

The goal isn’t to create a finished piece for the wall. It is to reconnect with the joy of painting while learning about these two mediums. We’ll close with a brief, supportive (and optional) show-and-tell to share what unfolded.

About the Teaching Artist

Lori Sanford-Ross is a painter and educator based in Beacon, NY. She holds an MFA from the New York Studio School and has received awards from Queens Council on the Arts and NYC Artist Corps. Lori has exhibited widely and currently teaches at Garrison Art Center and Fishkill Farms. Her teaching philosophy is simple: anyone can learn to draw. She helps students build strong observational skills while creating a calm, supportive environment where confidence can grow.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

We retain the right to cancel any workshop or class that does not meet the minimum enrollment requirement. Should a cancellation occur due to insufficient enrollment, a full refund will be issued to registered participants. For one-time workshops, cancellations will result in a class transfer or credit. For classes spanning multiple sessions, you may withdraw from a class and receive a full refund, minus 4% processing fees, up to one week before class begins. After that time, refunds will be issued as credit for future classes. No-shows are not eligible for refunds or class credit. If a class is canceled due to instructor illness or inclement weather, we will make every effort to reschedule. If we can't reschedule we will issue you a refund. Refunds, transfers, or application fee reimbursements will not be provided on or after the date of the first class.

WORKSHOP PARCIPATION For ALL workshops inside the classroom, you must: Have sufficient vision to be able to see and perceive instructions and demonstrations by a workshop instructor independently or with the assistance of a designated companion. We offer a complimentary ticket for anyone that needs a companion for both our adults and youth programs. Be able to remain adequately fed, hydrated, and properly manage all personal medications, including dosing and administration, independently or with the assistance of a designated companion. Be able to participate in a group setting without negatively impacting or jeopardizing the health or safety of the other participants or instructors. Be able to maintain your own safety in an environment where allergen exposure and cross- contamination may occur. For our OUTDOOR or RETREAT WORKSHOPS you will be required to sign a liability waiver to participate. PHOTO/VIDEO RELEASE By participating in any classes, workshops, or events at That Creative Space, you grant permission for photographs and/or video footage of you and/or your artwork created during the class to be used by That Creative Space for promotional purposes. This may include—but is not limited to—use on the studio’s website, social media platforms, printed materials, and other marketing outlets. If you do not wish to be photographed or recorded, please notify a staff member in writing prior to the start of the class or event.
