Overview
In this hands-on workshop with teaching artist Katrin Reifeiss, you’ll fold, bind, clamp, and wrap fabric to create one-of-a-kind designs using indigo dye.
Part art, part process, Shibori invites you to slow down and embrace a little unpredictability. No two pieces come out exactly the same, and that’s part of the beauty. As fabric unfolds from the dye bath, you’ll reveal layered patterns, soft imperfections, and striking contrasts unique to your piece.
During the workshop, you’ll learn two Shibori techniques:
- Itajime Shibori — folded and clamped resist techniques that create geometric patterns such as squares, polka dots, lattice designs, tortoiseshell-inspired forms, and layered compositions
- Arashi Shibori — also known as “storm” Shibori, a wrapping technique that creates flowing stripes and diagonal line patterns
Participants are encouraged to bring pre-washed natural fiber fabrics or clothing to dye, including cotton, linen, hemp, silk, rayon, or natural fiber blends. Smaller items work best. Please avoid oversized items like duvet covers. You’ll also want to bring a plastic bag to transport your dyed fabric home. Whether you’re completely new to textile dyeing or simply curious to try something different, this workshop offers a relaxing and tactile way to spend time making with your hands.
