“The function of art is to do more than tell it like it is—it’s to imagine what is possible.” — bell hooks
Throughout history, artists have used their work to challenge injustice, inspire dialogue, and imagine a better future. Protest art has long been a powerful form of creative expression—giving voice to ideas, experiences, and hopes for change.
In this workshop, we'll explore the rich tradition of protest art through mixed media collage, linoleum printmaking, and other expressive techniques. Using words, images, and symbols, you'll create a one-of-a-kind artwork that reflects the change you want to see in the world.
Whether your message is personal, political, or rooted in your community, you'll be guided through the creative process while exploring how art can spark conversation, build connection, and inspire action. Participants are encouraged to bring newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, or other printed materials they'd like to incorporate into their artwork. We'll also have a selection of newspapers, magazines, and all the materials you'll need. Along the way, you'll learn a variety of mixed media and printmaking techniques that will give you new creative tools for expressing your ideas and your voice.
3 Hour workshop. No experience necessary. Materials Provided. All skill levels welcome. Adults &15+
A Note About This Workshop:
We recognize that this workshop takes place just days after the November 3 election, which may be an emotional time. At That Creative Space, we're committed to creating a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment where everyone can explore creative expression through art. This workshop is about learning new mixed media techniques and expressing your ideas through the creative process. We ask all participants to respect one another and contribute to an atmosphere of kindness, curiosity, and thoughtful dialogue, regardless of differing viewpoints.
About the Teaching Artist:
Kaelin Martin (they/them) is a local interdisciplinary artist whose work explores themes of the body, love, and social change. Working across collage, printmaking, sculpture, photography, installation, and painting, they see art as both a form of self-expression and a catalyst for dialogue. A 2024 graduate of SUNY Purchase, Kaelin has exhibited throughout the Hudson Valley and New York City and is passionate about helping others discover the power of creative expression.
